Alas, despite an early appearance by the Tarot deck Marseille there is no more sign of them, but there is pin-sticking magic and black masses, oh yeah. This seems surprisingly dark for the time and in such a lush production. Well, partly: costumes and sets for sure, although beaucoup de bad wigs because you know people in the past are always 🙄 whatever. Loosely based on the big scandal that led to the sun king declaring all magic was fake, which of course worked! Why do you doubt it?! Oh, yeah because the occult was about to really ramp up for the so-called age of reason. This film centered on the women which is probably why it’s not been big upped by film bros. Also not bad on the effects of class on both accusation and punishment AKA burned at the stake v retirement to a convent. Well worth a watch.
