Sunday at Granddad’s
Photograph
8×10
2024
$199

This photo was taken when Charlie Walker (my partner’s dad) stepped out of the room for a moment to put the kettle on; the light was just perfect and I love the sense that he will pop back in any minute. He lives surrounded by pictures, cards, and gifts from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Blue Nights (after Joan Didion and Dad)
Photograph
5×7
2023
$99

On the last flight back from Michigan after my father died I took this photo out a plane window. For most of the worst of COVID times, my brother and I were swapping between NY and MI to care for him as he succumbed to Alzheimer’s. I was reading Joan Didion’s memoir about the death of her daughter when the extraordinary light caught my attention.

Fibre Nazar
Crocheted Yarn
8×8
2024
$50

The nazar is a very old charm against the evil eye, popular from the Indian subcontinent to the lands around the Mediterranean. In the surveillance culture that surrounds us, the evil eye takes on a new meaning. I like a DIY approach to magical items; the real power is in our intentions.

Hagstone Charm II
Mixed Media
12x1x1
2024
$50

When mudlarking I am generally looking for hagstones: most of the ones I have collected are either from the River Tay in Dundee or from the Thames in London. They have a long history as protective charms. Beware looking through the hole: it’s said that one may see fairies that way, but they are much more dangerous than popular culture would have it.
