Writerly Advice in the T-U

I’m among the quoted writers in this piece at the Times Union (or is that TimesUnion as it appears to be on the website?). Are you NaNoWriMo-ing? Buddy me if you are. I am mostly doing this intense month of writing to make sure I finally get the draft done of my next Fox Spirit novel. Deadlines are always motivating.

I’m revising last year’s NaNoWriMo project and getting ready to send it out to gauge potential interest. Meanwhile I have ten thousand other things I ought to be doing, too. It’s always a juggling act.

Conquered: First Draft

‘I have Conquer’d, and shall still Go on Conquering. Nothing can withstand the fury of my Course among the Stars of God & in the Abysses of the Accuser. My Enthusiasm is still what it was, only Enlarged and conform’d.’

Which is to say I think I’ve finished the first draft of the comic academic roman à clef. Another pass tomorrow to make sure most glaring idiocies are gone before I pass it along to my beta readers. I’m not usually one who prevails upon beta readers, but being so close to actual events I need to ascertain that I have sufficiently skirted specificity to be safe in my spoofing.

And how better to celebrate than with Blake’s Melancholy — well, endings are beginnings, beginnings endings. One thing crossed off my to-do list, a moment to celebrate and then onward. Much to create: busy, busy busy.

2013 Round Up

2013-12-26 01.22.01

I think of this as the “sabbatical year” but the truth is it’s only the second half that’s been that delirious wild ride of freedom time for reflection, research and writing. I don’t tend to be the kind of person who spends much time looking back, but it’s helpful at times to assess where you’ve been the better to be sure you know where you’re going.

Like the man said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

So things that happened this year were not always easy to measure: laughing with friends, playing with kids, hanging out with my sweetie, travel, reading, all the idling that makes work that much more meaningful. Work hard, play harder. I’m conscious of ‘making the most’ of this flexible year, but I also believe making the most of it means lots of idling (including trips to Orkney and London). We did a lot of work on the house too; hey, I painted that fence! Bit by bit.

Of course, I measure my life in pages mostly. Here’s what I seem to have got published this year:

So watch this space, because you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet!
