I’m delighted to be part of the latest issue of the American Museum of Paramusicology’s journal writing about the mythical harp of Finland, the kantele. I’m always happy to take any chance to talk about the beauty of this traditional lap harp and its legendary beginnings as the jawbone of a pike. But wait — there’s more! as the advertisements say. Lots in this jam-packed issue full of fascinating information and music. From Matt’s intro:
As our fascist government threatens the well being of the American people, most recently through their bill of greed, terror, racism, and death, on this July 4th we divest wayward patriotism to strum the harp of life. This harp-themed issue is rich with cultural diversity, creative symbolism, and transformative power, exploring the harp from diverse perspectives and traditions featuring several guest contributors. Artist and author Kate Laity introduces us to the Finnish lore of the kantele harp. Harpist, composer, and educator Nailah Hunter shares some visual art and poetry from her daily haiku and watercolor practice. Trimbist, composer, and Moondog specialist Julian Calv shares a reflection on Moondog’s troubadour harp. Harpist and composer Sissi Makropoulou offers us a sneak peak at her upcoming album, sharing an extended version of her track “Haint Harp” as well as the paranormally-informed score for this work. Editor Matt Marble explores the relationship between harpist Carlos Salzedo and artist/astrologist Dane Rudhyar, focusing on their mutual affinity for the number five and its transformative symbolism. And closing us out is harpist and improviser Melissa Achten who shares a look into Labyrinths, her recent harp commission of composer Eli Klausner, inspired by the enigmatic work of Jorge Luis Borges.
