Assuming I awoke on time at dawn I am on my way to the land of my ancestors again. When I last visited in 2006 I had a Finlandia Foundation grant to go visit the ancient rock paintings (thank you!). It was an amazing trip! And you saw the results in Unikirja (if you haven’t now is a perfect time to buy yourself a copy!)
Once again I will get to hang out with my lovely friend Laura, I will meet my cousin Helka and her daughter Anni and some other people who may be related to me. I will first land in Helsinki and then head to the north. I have suggested that I may be riding around on reindeer with jolly old Saint Nick. I will be sure to take photos if that is true.
You can see photos from the last trip here.
Hauskaa matkaa, Kate! (Have a happy journey.) I’m looking forward to reading all about it and seeing some photos.
Will do!
Great photos from Finland. Rock paintings are not easy to shoot photos.
Thank you! They were indeed difficult. I was fortunate one of the best ended up being used in the cover of Unikirja.
Nowadays easiest way to reach Astuvansalmi Rock Paintings is to make a cruise from Mikkeli. All day cruise includes also lunch and Amazon show. I will publish a post from it later in the fall.
Yes, that’s what I did. I wrote it up some years back. Most enjoyable.
