FACING THE UNKNOWN: IMAGINATION IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC

Lightforms Art Center, Hudson NY
January 8th 2021 – April 3rd 2021

Lily Morris, Millicent Young, Osi Audu, Martina Angela Müller, Patrick Stolfo, Laura Summer, Elmer Orobio & Richard Neal

Completely new in recent history, the pandemic has created a never before experienced inner and outer environment with its great loss of life, mourning those we have lost, the disappearance of livelihoods, homes and meaningful, close interactions with others. Great shortcomings of services in our society have been uncovered. We have been seismically shifted into isolation where we miss the close bonds to those we love and experience an especially stymied cultural life that usually sustains our whole well-being...

I wholeheartedly recommend this exhibit at Lightforms, who ran the marvelous Hilma af Klint exhibit, too. In particular the works by Lily Morris, Millicent Young and Martina Angela Müller really lifted my spirits with a sense of awe. Probably the standout for me was Müller’s elegant and otherworldly New Nike, but Morris’ natural imagery brought out incredible magic from the wonders of nature. Young’s enormous hanging pieces use the space of the gallery to expand inspiration–a contrast to her more stark pieces at the back of the gallery. The show is on a for a good while yet, which allow me to pop back in several times and feel restored.
