EUPop2023 at Stirling

Christine Ferguson’s keynote on Esotericism in the Victorian Occult

I will spare you most of my photos taken as notes but the campus itself was gorgeous and full of oystercatchers who nest between the buildings which are then closed to keep them safe. So lovely! I was planning to go up to the castle and cemetery during our free afternoon — mostly to think about Dunbar and Damian for the next conference — but it absolutely bucketed down, only to shine brightly that evening after all the tourist stops were shut.

Oystercatchers! Shrieking through the presentations and nesting on campus.

The EUPop conference was great. Jacky ‘Dr Noir’ Collins and her team put together a welcoming and vibrant experience with so many cross-currents of connection, with everything from true crime fans, to the femme fatale tradition in post-Franco film, fashion, heavy metal, you name it — ideas pinging across conversations and insights traded. Like PCA but on a much smaller scale so not completely overwhelming, yet so diverse in topics and critical lenses that I definitely felt enriched with new perspectives. Next year Tallinn! Keep an eye out for the CfP.
