Tarot at the Warburg

Can’t get to the Warburg Institute for the amazing Tarot: Origins & Afterlives exhibit? Or you went and you want to relive the fun?

I can help: I made a video of some photos so you can at least get a feel for it. Expect the usual caveats about photos of things in cases (odd points of light, the occasional inadvertent selfie) but I had a chance to linger over some images that were hitting the mark that day, though it was quite busy! I think it’s a big hit.

Obviously people have their favourites — I am obsessing lately over Etteilla for…reasons. Pamela Colman Smith may be the best known tarot artist on the globe, but it was nice to see her paired with Austin Osman Spare.

And what a treat to see some of Lady Frieda Harris’ art for the Thoth deck. Absolutely stunning. I hope there will be a future outing for all of her work. This is the first time they have been out. I took advantage of meeting Bill Sherman to ask more about the pictures and he seemed eager to let them be seen more. They’re quite excited about the makeover of the Institute and there’s a whole host of events around this exhibit which you should check out if you can.

As you’ll see in the video it’s not just historic and it’s not just cards. Glad to share my travels with you all.
