Nephomancy

Happy Walpurgisnacht — or Vappu or whatever you celebrate on the eve of May Day or Beltane. I am sharing my short film Nephomancy as it has been through the festival circuit and now will join the other hauntings that eminate from Hookland, its inspiration. Witches see portents in all things — the world is alive and who knows what echo or ripple may give you the hint you need to divine what is coming?

Nephomancy is scrying with clouds. The text comes from the Exeter Book riddles 1 and 3 which you can find here. I have turned the lines into their own spell of making and knowing. Filmed in the beloved Howff right in the heart of Dundee, this little project captures many things I love.

It received a little love on the film festival circuit. It’s always a challenge to find an audience for surrealist or magical little films. But as many of us have long figured out, it’s the making that fills you with delight, working out all the little problems and turning your vision into something you can share. If people like it, so much the better — but really it’s the creating that satisfies.
